How someone gets into this list

The shortlist is built from Wikidata, ranked by how often each person's English Wikipedia article is read in the past year, and filtered to people who are alive and have photographs available under a free licence on Wikimedia Commons.

For every person, the pipeline downloads candidate photographs and keeps only those it can verify: one clearly dominant face, at least a minimum size in pixels, and no evidence that the image is a reproduction of a painting or drawing. Photographs are then chosen from the middle of each person's career, because matching works best when the reference face is at a similar stage of life to the photo you upload.
